Provincial, federal funding for infrastructure upgrade in Upper Miramichi

UPPER MIRAMICHI (GNB) – The provincial and federal governments are investing a combined $56,598 to upgrade the community park in the rural community of Upper Miramichi.

“Our government is proud to invest in important community infrastructure projects that promote healthy living for residents and families, and that make our communities even better places in which to live and raise a family,” said Southwest Miramichi MLA Jake Stewart.

Stewart attended the event for Economic Development Minister Paul Robichaud, who is also minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation.

“By making these investments in local infrastructure, we are helping boost economic activity and maintain a high quality of life for Canadians,” said Miramichi MP Tilly O’Neill Gordon. “This community park is a key part of the community infrastructure in Boiestown. These upgrades will enhance the existing activities available to the community and will continue to encourage social and physical activities available to local residents.”

O’Neill Gordon attended the event for Rob Moore, minister of state for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).

The provincial government is investing $28,000 through the Regional Development Corporation, while the federal government, through ACOA, is contributing $28,598 under the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund. The Rural Community of Upper Miramichi is investing $18,300.

“The Rural Community of Upper Miramichi is pleased to be receiving federal-provincial funding to upgrade our community park,” said Mayor Douglas Munn. “The project will help improve healthy living for residents. It will give our youth a place to play and exercise, while improving pride in the community. The council has been pursuing this project for some time now and would like to extend a large thank-you to the community for its support.”

The project involves renovating the existing community park, which includes new fixed playground equipment, tennis nets and permanent poles; as well as the landscaping, fencing and asphalting required to accommodate the new equipment. A skating area will be developed and new lights installed. The former park office will be renovated to create a warming area for skaters.
